Can roof tents be stolen? How to protect your tent (in under 5 minutes)
Johan Pettersson |20/03, 2026
The roof tent sits up there on the car, weighs 70–80 kg and is hard to miss. But can it actually be stolen? Yes, it can — but with the right protection, it's basically impossible.
How is a roof tent stolen?
Most roof tents are mounted with four or eight bolts into the roof rack. The standard solution for most manufacturers? Regular nuts. This means that anyone with a socket wrench can theoretically unscrew the tent.
In practice, this is unusual. The tent weighs 60–90 kg, it takes at least two people to lift it down, and it takes time. Thieves look for easy targets. But that's exactly why it's worth making it a little more complicated.
5 easy ways to protect your roof tent
1. Switch to anti-theft lug nuts — the easiest thing you can do
This is the most effective measure, and it literally takes a few minutes. Anti-theft nuts require a special tool to loosen — a tool that the thief rarely has with him. With regular nuts replaced with anti-theft roof tent nuts, the tent cannot be dismantled with standard tools. Simple, cheap and effective.
2. Park smartly
The same logic as for bicycles applies here: visibility and movement are deterrents. Park close to the house, in a well-lit area or where people are moving. Thieves work in the dark and quiet.
3. Use obstacles
The tent has to be lifted off the car — and that requires space around the vehicle. If you park close to a garage wall, a fence, or another car, it will be much more difficult to access. Combined with anti-theft nuts, it's a strong combination.
4. Bring the tent inside during the winter
If you don't use your roof tent in the winter, store it in a garage, storage room or in a roof lift. This reduces both the risk of theft and wear and tear — a double win.
5. Think like a thief
It sounds simple, but that's how it works: the more work a theft requires, the more likely the thief is to choose an easier target. Theft protection isn't about making it impossible — it's about making it difficult enough.
A small upgrade that makes a big difference
A roof tent is an investment worth protecting. The single best measure is to switch to anti-theft roof tent nuts — it takes five minutes and makes the tent impossible to dismantle with standard tools. The rest is common parking and everyday sense.
